How to Handle Meta's Advantage+ Creative Enhancements When Bulk Launching
Meta's Advantage+ creative enhancements can silently re-crop, reformat, and rewrite your ads. Here's what each enhancement does and how to keep control when launching at volume.
You spent real money on that creative. The aspect ratios are deliberate, the first frame is tested, the copy is exactly as long as it should be. Then Meta launches it with automatic “enhancements” switched on, and what actually runs is a re-cropped, re-brightened, auto-templated version you never approved.
If you launch one ad at a time, you might catch it. If you bulk launch forty, you almost certainly won’t. Here’s what Advantage+ creative enhancements actually do, and how to stay in control at volume.
What Advantage+ creative enhancements are
Advantage+ creative (not to be confused with Advantage+ shopping campaigns) is a bundle of automatic modifications Meta can apply to your ads at delivery time, including:
- Image and video cropping to fit placements the original wasn’t sized for
- Brightness, contrast and filter adjustments
- Music added to image ads in some placements
- Text improvements — rearranging or re-emphasizing your primary text, headline, and description
- Image templates — overlaying your copy onto the image itself
- 3D motion and animation effects applied to static images
- Catalog and site content pulled in as extra creative elements
Meta’s pitch is that these lift performance on average. Sometimes they do. The problem is on average: the enhancements are applied per-impression, you rarely see which version ran, and “average” includes brands whose creative was weak to begin with. If your creative is deliberate, automatic modification is mostly downside risk — off-brand crops, garbled text overlays, music on an ad that was designed to be silent.
Why bulk launching makes this worse
Enhancement toggles live at the ad level, buried in the ad setup flow, and several default to on. When you create ads by hand, unticking them is an annoying-but-doable ritual. When you bulk launch:
- Via Ads Manager’s XLSX import, enhancement settings are hard to express per-row, and defaults win. Forty ads means forty chances for an enhancement you didn’t want.
- Via duplication, enhancements inherit from the source ad — including the ones someone left on three months ago.
- Via any tool that doesn’t handle them explicitly, you get whatever Meta’s current defaults are. And the defaults have shifted toward more automation, more often.
The result: the more efficiently you launch, the less you know about what’s actually running.
How to keep control
1. Audit what’s currently on
Open a few live ads in Ads Manager and check the Advantage+ creative section. Most teams doing this for the first time find enhancements running they never consciously enabled.
2. Decide your policy per enhancement, not wholesale
A reasonable starting policy for teams with deliberate creative: everything off, then selectively re-enable anything you’ve A/B tested and verified. Test enhancements the way you’d test creative — deliberately, not by default.
3. Make the “off” state part of your launch workflow, not a memory task
Any control that depends on someone remembering to untick six boxes per ad will fail at volume. Your launch workflow — whatever tool it runs through — should apply your enhancement policy automatically on every ad it creates.
This is exactly how advantage handles it: every ad launched through it has Advantage+ creative enhancements disabled automatically at creation time, through Meta’s Marketing API. The creative you upload is the creative that runs — same crop, same copy, same everything — whether you launch four ads or four hundred. No checklist, no ritual, no drift.
4. Re-check after Meta ships changes
Meta adds new enhancement types regularly, and new ones can arrive enabled. Whatever your policy is, re-verify it quarterly — or use a launch path that pins the behavior for you.
The principle underneath
Automation should remove work, not remove control. Bulk launching is automation on the workflow; Advantage+ enhancements are automation on the creative itself. The first makes you faster at shipping what you decided. The second quietly changes what you decided. Keep the first, control the second.
